Aussie rocker Jimmy Barnes recently shared a concerning health update, revealing he will undergo open heart surgery in the coming hours in response to a bacterial infection that has extended to his heart. The former Cold Chisel frontman, who recently canceled the remaining gigs for the year due to health issues, disclosed the news with disappointment.

Despite efforts to combat the bacterial infection over the past fortnight, Barnes disclosed, “It’s infected an otherwise healthy valve that was replaced some years ago due to a congenital defect, so I’ll be getting open heart surgery over the next few hours to clear out this infection and put in a clean valve.”

Expressing frustration, the 67-year-old musician acknowledged the impending hiatus from his usual activities, stating, “This will obviously take me out of action for a little while. Just a few weeks ago I was the fittest I’ve been in decades!”

Barnes admitted the sudden nature of his health decline, making it uncertain how his upcoming shows would be affected. Apologizing for the inconvenience, he urged patience as his team worked on a new plan. The tour schedule on Barnes’ website indicates at least 10 booked concerts throughout the summer months.

Acknowledging the support received, Barnes thanked his wife Jane for her unwavering care and the medical professionals attending to him. With a note of caution, he informed fans that this update might be the last direct communication for a while, given the seriousness of the impending operation.

Closing his message, Barnes wished everyone well for the holidays and expressed hope for a brighter 2024.
