The FBI is investigating a shooting in the vicinity of Donald Trump as an assassination attempt.

The former US President was playing golf at his course in West Palm Beach, Florida around 2pm Sunday local time when shots rang out.

A Secret Service agent opened fire on the suspected gunmen and agents whisked Trump to safety.

Trump has been confirmed unharmed and safe.

A witness reported seeing a man run out of the bushes and jumping into a black Nissan.

Local Sherriff Ric Bradshaw says they tracked down and arrested one man nearby.

“In the bushes where this guy was, is an AK-47 style rifle with a scope, two backpacks and a go-pro which he was going to use to take picture,” Mr Bradhsaw says.

“He was probably between 300 and 500 yards [away from Trump], but with a rifle and a scope like that that’s not a long distance.”

The matter is under investigation.

It comes two months after the Presidential candidate was shot at during a rally in Pennsylvania, suffering a wound to his ear.

More to come.
