Australia’s dreams and hearts have been shattered this morning, as the Matildas lost their final glimmer of hope.
After a heartbreaking loss to the US team, the Matildas only needed Colombia to draw with or defeat Canada to keep their dream alive for a little bit longer. However, Canada just came out on top, securing a 1-0 win, officially knocking the Matildas out of the game.
Clare Wheeler said: “You can tell we’re all devastated.”
“It’s going to be one of those games we wish we could have again… We’re sorry we couldn’t get the job done today.”
Coach Tony Gustavsson said: “I said to the players in the circle that they should be extremely proud of the performance. They stuck to the game plan … We were playing one of the most in-form teams of the tournament.”
After the devastating loss to England in the 2023 World Cup, this loss has come before our hearts had fully healed!
