A parliamentary inquiry has been launched into the controversial flood wall surrounding Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse and its role in the October 2022 flood event along the Maribyrnong River.
Dozens of properties were inundated by flood water when the Maribyrnong broke its banks, but the grounds of the Melbourne Cup track remained clear, thanks to the 2.5-metre wall built in 2007.
The inquiry will feature public hearings where senior staff from local councils, representatives from government departments, and stakeholders such as the Victoria State Emergency Service Volunteers Association and Melbourne Water will provide their perspectives on the flood event and the flood wall’s contribution.
